Creating good culture in company's seem to be one of the most difficult tasks to accomplish. I recently had the incredible privilege to speak with Clay Olson Entrepreneur and Co-Founder of Fight The New Drug at his office in Salt Lake regarding this topic. Let me make this clear, I went to his office to thank him for what he is doing to help change the world on behalf of BYU-Idaho because I know many support him. What actually happened was a seemingly knowledge and wisdom piercing my heart with truth, pure truth on not only how to run create good company culture but how to strengthen friendships and be the best you! I quote, "I have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to company culture. No gossip. Even if you think you are helping it never does. No matter if your business is run flat or as a pyramid there is a proper way to address concerns in a company. This almost caused our company to collapse in the beginning." Clay continues, "Another thing I would say is E

If I one thing to say to aspiring Entrepreneurs....

The following is my advice to aspiring entrepreneurs based upon the knowledge college Entrepreneur class has helped give me :)   If you had one final lecture to share with a group of students on what you have learned from this course, what would you share?  Beginning the entrepreneur journey has been a remarkable experience and implementing my own business continues to be a dream of mine. It's not that hard to sell something to someone, maybe a friend or family member, but it is a lot harder to develop something that will last longer than a week or year, something that will out live you. I believe this is the kind of business that this course is wanting to teach you to create, and it is possible. I believe that aspiring entrepreneurs should not give up on anything they might be longing to create. We are a lot stronger, smarter, and capable than we think we are. I personally have felt dark and depressing thoughts come into my head saying, "There is no way you could do t

Starting to Cultivating the Entrepreneurial Spirit

Image
I am happy to say that I am beginning to feel a great spirit of intuition and creativity within me. I'm looking forward to implementing my idea; "Rent a Scooter!"  I really enjoyed reading the story of Evan Williams the early co-founder and CEO of Twitter. He experienced many of different challenges. As a sophomore in college Evan dropped out, then moved to Florida being a 'direct marketing guru.' Eventually he began helping start up a company called 'Odeo.' Odeo's success was limited due to Apple's competitive progressive nature. Yet at this point an opportunity arose as an undergrad at New York University Jack Dorsey entered on the team with Evan Williams. United, Twitter came to be. Twitter's value as of 2013 was 9 million dollars. This I feel is a great example how we should welcome opportunities and new ideas as Entrepreneurs. Larry North of the Acton foundation spoke to my heart as he shared his story. Throughout his video he said thi

Never Give Up !

"The marketplace is open for everyone even for those who are not interested in personal gain--such as people who get inspired by the prospect of social change for betterment. Social goals can replace greed as a powerful motivational force. Social-consciousness-driven enterprises can be formidable competitors to greed based enterprises." I love the closing remarks of Muhammud Yunus, "irrespective of what you learn in school always be ready to unlearn and relearn. Don't give up dreaming. Be a dreamer and keep on trying to make the dream come true. Dream about the world you would like to have. If we all dream about a better world, I can guarantee you that we will create a better world." I absolutely loved learning about Entrepreneurship and consecration. Elder Robert Gay, a very successful business man, spoke from his very soul on how he felt about about entrepreneurship in connection with the gospel. He asked the questions, "Where/how must you keep your

How should we view money?

Image
Enjoy this week's blog about $$ :) How can your view of money effect the way you live? I appreciate Steven W. Gibson's quote, "Money is neither good nor bad. The Love of money or the obsession with accumulating money from others unrighteously, no matter what the method, may be evil, but money in and of itself is neither good nor evil....It isn't the million dollars that is bad or evil but how it is used." If my view of money is clearly for no other reason than to please myself, such as buying cars, toys, technology or nice clothing, that it will soon never be enough. We will continue to want more, the next bigger and better thing. I found this to be true as I recently made a fairly large purchase buying a motor scooter. It runs a 50cc engine and goes about 45 mph top speed street, legal and not even requires a motorcycle license due to its small engine. Yet no more than a week later I found myself saying, "It's nice, but I wouldn't mind having

What motivates/drives me to feel important?

Course concepts that resonated with you this week = Woody Woodward's book  Your Emotional Fingerprint  asks the question, "What motivates and drives me to feel important? As I listened to this week's video by Jim Ritchie and was asked this question I felt a sense of responsibility to sincerely ask myself this question. Taylor Richards video  Think Big  was exceptional. I enjoyed his personal experience of winning two different awards based upon company's extraordinary success. This two concepts seemed to really do it for me this week. (https://vimeo.com/27928168) Do Watch ! Individual learning experiences = To be honest, this week I found myself experiencing two profound things that strengthened me. First, the importance of being grateful. Earlier this week I was told in the late evening by a very good friend that for my own personal growth I needed to recognize the good things around me. I'm privileged to be schooled at an incredible university, my relations

Persistence and Greatness

This week I found myself giving a training on leadership to the club I help direct here on BYU-Idaho campus. The training was a topic that a friend had shared with me and had just resonated with me. I used the visual below to represent how many organizations work. Each authoritative figure representing each dot and each arrow representing their progress.  What then changes when we change the arrows? Following this brief, yet what I felt was a profound principle was an incredibly creative discussion on practical inspirational ways to build our club into something better. I walked out of that meeting feeling happier and more confident in Life Skills Club. According to the author Jim Collins, 'good is the enemy of great.' It is good to laugh and have fun, I love being entertained and having a good laugh, but it is better to do my home teaching and succor a struggling brother/sister given the two options. A very wise man I met with this week spoke to me about what h
